Weekend Football Round-Up: Brighton Fly, Hull Stun United and Dundee Claim Derby Honours
The new Premier League season arrived with emphatic victories, unexpected defeats and late drama, while the EFL delivered goals throughout its three divisions.
Brighton produced the biggest top-flight win of the weekend, Hull City celebrated a memorable return to the Premier League and Liverpool needed a stoppage-time penalty to escape Newcastle with a point.
Elsewhere, West Bromwich Albion continued their perfect Championship start, Bristol Rovers and Newport County shared eight League Two goals, Dundee claimed the first city derby of the Scottish season and Connah’s Quay Nomads extended their winning run in Wales.
Brighton Set the Early Premier League Pace
Brighton & Hove Albion ended the opening Premier League weekend at the top of the early table after an extraordinary 4-0 victory over Aston Villa.
All four goals arrived during a disastrous first half for Villa. Victor Lindelöf turned the ball into his own net before Maxim De Cuyper doubled Brighton’s advantage. Jack Hinshelwood then scored twice in quick succession to complete the scoring before the interval.
Villa’s afternoon deteriorated further when João Gomes was dismissed for violent conduct. Brighton did not add to their lead after the break, but the contest had already been settled by a devastating opening 31 minutes.
Manchester City also began the season with a victory, although Enzo Maresca’s first Premier League match in charge proved considerably less comfortable.
Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth a first-half lead at the Etihad Stadium and the visitors remained ahead until the closing stages. Marc Guéhi finally equalised in the 84th minute before Joško Gvardiol struck in stoppage time to give City a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Liverpool also left it very late at St James’ Park.
Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle United an early lead before Cody Gakpo equalised shortly after half-time. Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s advantage, but Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw for Liverpool.
The match was preceded by an emotional tribute to Kevin Keegan, whose playing and managerial career left such a strong connection with both clubs.
Champions Arsenal Start with a Win
Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City on Friday evening.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring before Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard completed a comfortable win at the Emirates Stadium.
Coventry faced one of the most difficult assignments possible on their return to the top flight. They competed admirably but were ultimately unable to contain an Arsenal side that quickly settled into its familiar rhythm.
The result gave the defending champions an immediate three points and a clean sheet.
Hull Stun Manchester United
Hull City produced the biggest surprise of Saturday’s Premier League programme by defeating Manchester United 2-0.
Back in the top flight for the first time since 2017, Hull scored twice during the opening half through Semi Ajayi and debutant Nobel Mendy.
United created opportunities but could not find a way past a determined Hull defence. The newly promoted side protected its lead effectively and celebrated an opening-day result that few outside East Yorkshire would have predicted.
There was another difficult afternoon for one of the established clubs at Brentford, where Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 3-0.
Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode scored for the Bees, who overwhelmed Tottenham with their energy and intensity.
Ipswich Town marked their latest return to the Premier League with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland. Jack Clarke scored the winning goal against his former club in the 90th minute.
Everton defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 through goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry, while Anton Stach’s late free kick gave Leeds United a 1-0 victory away to Nottingham Forest.
West Brom Continue Their Perfect Championship Start
West Bromwich Albion made it two wins from two in the Championship by defeating Burnley 3-1 at The Hawthorns.
An own goal gave Burnley an early lead, but Harry Whitwell brought Albion level before half-time. Isaac Price scored twice after the interval to complete the turnaround and leave West Brom with maximum points.
Millwall also made an impressive statement by beating Norwich City 3-0. Arconte scored twice before Luke Cundle added the third late in the match.
Portsmouth earned their first victory following promotion by winning 3-1 away to Lincoln City. Two early goals placed Pompey in control before Ebou Adams completed the scoring in the second half.
Wolverhampton Wanderers recorded the same scoreline at Preston North End, while Southampton defeated Stoke City 3-1 after two late goals transformed what had been a close contest.
Charlton Athletic continued their encouraging start by beating West Ham United 2-1. Miles Leaburn gave Charlton an early lead before the visitors secured all three points despite Joel Piroe replying for West Ham.
Blackburn Rovers came from behind to defeat Middlesbrough 2-1, with two goals in six second-half minutes overturning the visitors’ early advantage.
There were plenty of draws elsewhere. Birmingham City rescued a 2-2 draw against Bristol City with a stoppage-time penalty, while Derby County and Cardiff City also shared four goals.
Wrexham drew 1-1 with Watford, and the matches between Queens Park Rangers and Bolton Wanderers and between Swansea City and Sheffield United both finished goalless.
Burton Spoil Leicester’s League One Homecoming
Burton Albion earned one of the eye-catching results in League One by winning 2-1 away to Leicester City.
The Brewers scored twice inside the opening 25 minutes through Dennis and Kgaogelo Chauke. Leicester reduced the deficit before half-time but could not find an equaliser.
Blackpool also claimed an impressive away victory, defeating Stockport County 2-1 after establishing a two-goal first-half lead.
Leyton Orient won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic, while Oxford United scored twice during the closing stages to beat Stevenage 2-1. Peterborough United defeated Mansfield Town by the same scoreline.
Five of Saturday’s League One fixtures ended level.
Luton Town and Notts County produced a 2-2 draw at Kenilworth Road, while Bromley drew 1-1 with Cambridge United and Milton Keynes Dons shared the points with Huddersfield Town.
The matches between AFC Wimbledon and Reading and between Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley both finished goalless. Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle drew 1-1.
Eight Goals at Bristol Rovers
The weekend’s highest-scoring EFL match came at the Memorial Stadium, where Bristol Rovers defeated Newport County 5-3.
Newport took the lead inside the opening minute through Harrison Biggins, but Bristol Rovers recovered to lead 4-2 during the second half.
Newport pulled another goal back in stoppage time before Fabrizio Cavegn scored his second of the match in the ninth additional minute to complete an extraordinary afternoon.
Barnet continued their strong start by winning 3-1 away to Shrewsbury Town. Callum Stead Reeves opened the scoring before late goals from Charlie Lakin and Tom Knowles secured the points.
Exeter City scored twice during the opening 13 minutes of their 2-0 victory over Accrington Stanley, while Crewe Alexandra defeated Northampton Town 1-0.
Chesterfield won 1-0 at Salford City through a second-minute goal from Lee Bonis. Crawley Town defeated Rochdale 2-1 and Colchester United came from behind to beat Oldham Athletic by the same scoreline.
Swindon Town won 2-1 against Cheltenham Town, while Port Vale and Tranmere Rovers drew 1-1. Fleetwood Town against Gillingham and Walsall against Grimsby Town both finished goalless.
Boreham Wood Impress in the National League
Boreham Wood maintained their excellent start in the National League with a commanding 3-0 victory away to Forest Green Rovers.
Carlisle United and FC Halifax Town both scored four. Carlisle defeated Hornchurch 4-1, while Halifax recorded the same result against Tamworth.
Eastleigh edged a five-goal contest against Scunthorpe United, winning 3-2, while Woking produced a dramatic late recovery to defeat AFC Fylde by the same scoreline.
Southend United won 3-1 at Solihull Moors and Yeovil Town beat Gateshead 3-0.
Boston United, Sutton United and Worthing also collected victories, while the matches between Harrogate Town and Barrow and between Kidderminster Harriers and Aldershot Town ended level.
Dundee Take the City Bragging Rights
Dundee defeated Dundee United 2-0 at Tannadice in the only Scottish Premiership fixture to survive a weekend heavily affected by European commitments.
Drey Wright opened the scoring with a superb strike shortly before half-time. Owen Bevan added the second after the break to complete a deserved derby victory.
Five Premiership fixtures were postponed because of Scottish clubs participating in UEFA play-off ties.
In the Scottish Championship, Stenhousemuir moved to the top of the early table with a 2-0 victory over Queen’s Park.
Raith Rovers beat Ayr United 2-0, Livingston defeated Dunfermline Athletic by the same scoreline and Arbroath scored a stoppage-time winner to beat Greenock Morton 2-1.
Ross County won 3-1 at Airdrieonians in League One, while Cove Rangers and Montrose both recorded 3-0 victories. Hamilton Academical remained unbeaten after drawing 0-0 with East Fife.
Clyde moved clear at the top of Scottish League Two by defeating Forfar Athletic 3-0.
Connah’s Quay Continue Their Winning Run
Connah’s Quay Nomads made it three consecutive Cymru Premier victories by winning 2-0 away to newly promoted Ammanford.
Ben Nash West opened the scoring shortly before half-time and Harry Franklin added the second during the closing stages.
The New Saints produced the biggest Welsh victory of the weekend by defeating Cardiff Metropolitan University 5-0.
Cambrian United continued their impressive introduction to top-flight football with a 3-0 win away to Haverfordwest County.
Barry Town United defeated Holywell Town 3-1, Penybont beat Llandudno 2-1 and Caernarfon Town won 2-0 at Trefelin.
Colwyn Bay collected a 1-0 victory over Airbus UK Broughton, while Briton Ferry Llansawel won by the same scoreline away to Flint Town United.
Five Winners in Northern Ireland
Five teams collected victories in the Northern Ireland Premiership, with Crusaders and Portadown producing the most entertaining contest.
Jordan Brooks scored a hat-trick as Crusaders won 3-2 at Seaview. Portadown threatened a recovery during the second half, but the home side held on.
Linfield defeated Cliftonville 1-0 through a goal from Chris McGee, while Glentoran scored twice during the closing stages to win 2-0 away to Ballymena United.
Irish Cup holders Coleraine maintained their unbeaten start by defeating Carrick Rangers 2-0. Joel Cooper broke the deadlock before Jamie McGonigle Doherty added the second.
Dungannon Swifts also won 2-0, with Sean McAllister and Andrew Mitchell scoring against Bangor.
Larne’s match against newly promoted Limavady United was postponed because of European commitments.
A Weekend That Set the Tone
It may have been only the opening weekend of the Premier League season, but there was already plenty to consider.
Brighton delivered the most complete top-flight performance, Hull supplied the biggest surprise and Manchester City and Liverpool both demonstrated the value of continuing until the final whistle.
Across the EFL, promoted clubs experienced mixed fortunes, established contenders began to emerge and Bristol Rovers and Newport County reminded everyone that League Two rarely has much interest in being predictable.
The first weekend under the new roundup schedule certainly did not leave us short of material.
