Midweek Football Round-Up: 19 August 2026

Midweek Football Round-Up: 17-19 August 2026

A dramatic Welsh derby, a goal-filled opening night in the EFL Trophy and several major transfers have dominated the football news between Monday and Wednesday.

Cardiff City denied Wrexham victory with almost the final kick of their Championship encounter, Stockport County and Barnet both enjoyed emphatic Trophy wins, while Manchester City midfielder Rodri completed his move to Barcelona.

Coventry City continued preparing for their Premier League return with two new attacking additions, and Celtic were preparing to begin their Champions League play-off against Austrian side LASK.

Colwill denies Wrexham at the last

Rubin Colwill scored a spectacular free-kick in the eighth minute of stoppage time to earn Cardiff City a 1-1 draw against Wrexham on Monday evening.

Wrexham had taken the lead after only three minutes through former Cardiff striker Kieffer Moore. The Wales international found space inside the penalty area and gave the visitors an ideal start to the latest meeting between the two Welsh clubs.

Cardiff gradually took control of possession but struggled to turn their pressure into clear opportunities. Wrexham defended their penalty area effectively and appeared set to begin their Championship campaign with an important away victory.

The match continued into an eighth minute of added time, however, and Cardiff were awarded a free-kick within shooting distance. Colwill stepped forward and sent a powerful effort beyond the goalkeeper to rescue a point with virtually the final kick of the evening.

It was Cardiff’s first point of the campaign and a particularly painful result for Wrexham, who had been only seconds away from claiming the Welsh derby bragging rights.

Stockport win nine-goal Trophy thriller

The EFL Trophy group stage began on Tuesday with six matches and no shortage of goals.

Stockport County recorded the evening’s highest-scoring victory, beating Everton Under-21s 6-3 at Edgeley Park.

Malik Mothersille opened the scoring after 11 minutes before Callum Camps and Mikael Mandron established a 3-0 Stockport lead by half-time. Everton’s young side then produced an impressive recovery after the interval.

Joel Catesby pulled one back before Braiden Graham converted a penalty. Graham scored again in the 77th minute to complete Everton’s comeback and level the match at 3-3.

The visitors were level for only two minutes. Tayo Edun restored Stockport’s lead before Mothersille scored twice during the closing stages, completing his hat-trick and giving the final score a more comfortable appearance than the second half had suggested.

Barnet also made an emphatic start by defeating Arsenal Under-21s 5-1 at The Hive.

Bright Siaw and Jack Maskell put Barnet two goals ahead during the opening 25 minutes. Tom Knowles then took control of the match, scoring either side of half-time before completing his hat-trick in the 69th minute.

Arsenal’s only reply came when an Archie Stevens delivery was deflected into the Barnet goal. The result placed Barnet in early control of their group and provided a difficult introduction for new Arsenal Under-21 head coach David Horseman.

Reading and Orient win their shoot-outs

Wigan Athletic defeated Aston Villa Under-21s 3-2 in another entertaining EFL Trophy match, while Brighton and Hove Albion’s youngsters recorded an impressive 3-0 victory away to Northampton Town.

The other two matches were settled by penalty shoot-outs after finishing level in normal time.

Reading and Wycombe Wanderers drew 1-1 after Junior Quitirna gave Wycombe the lead and Liam Fraser equalised with a long-range strike. Reading goalkeeper Jack Stevens then saved twice during the shoot-out as the Royals won 3-1 on penalties.

Leyton Orient and AFC Wimbledon also finished 1-1 before Orient prevailed 6-5 in a lengthy shoot-out.

The EFL Trophy group stage awards an additional point to the winner of a penalty shoot-out, meaning both Reading and Leyton Orient gained an early advantage without recording a victory in normal time.

Wednesday evening’s Trophy programme features Mansfield Town against Manchester City Under-21s at the One Call Stadium.

Rodri completes Barcelona move

The biggest transfer development of the week came when Rodri completed his move from Manchester City to Barcelona.

The 30-year-old midfielder has signed a contract running until June 2030. The transfer was reported to be worth approximately £65 million, ending Rodri’s highly successful seven-year association with Manchester City.

Rodri made 298 appearances and scored 28 goals for City after arriving from Atlético Madrid in 2019. His honours included four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League.

His most famous club goal came in the 2023 Champions League final, when his second-half strike against Inter Milan completed City’s historic treble.

Rodri also won the 2024 Ballon d’Or and captained Spain to victory at the 2026 World Cup. His departure leaves a substantial gap in the Manchester City midfield as new manager Enzo Maresca continues to reshape the squad inherited from Pep Guardiola.

City’s midfield changes continued on Wednesday when Dutch international Tijjani Reijnders completed a permanent transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah.

Newcastle and Villa strengthen their defences

Newcastle United completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina international Amar Dedic from Benfica on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old right-back has joined on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be worth £29.5 million. Dedic previously played for Red Bull Salzburg, Wolfsberger and Marseille before moving to Benfica.

His arrival gives Newcastle additional defensive options following the departure of Kieran Trippier and the injury suffered by Tino Livramento. Dedic could make his debut when Newcastle host Liverpool on Sunday.

Aston Villa also moved to strengthen the right side of their defence by reaching an agreement to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham United.

The former Crystal Palace and Manchester United defender is expected to join Villa initially on loan, with the agreement including provisions for the move to become permanent.

Coventry continue recruitment drive

Coventry City added two forwards to their squad as Frank Lampard prepared the club for its first Premier League season in 25 years.

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi joined from Nottingham Forest on Monday for a reported fee of approximately £9 million.

Awoniyi scored 21 goals in 90 Premier League appearances for Forest after joining the club from Union Berlin in 2022. He adds valuable top-flight experience to a Coventry squad preparing to visit champions Arsenal in Friday evening’s opening Premier League fixture.

Coventry followed that move on Wednesday by signing 19-year-old Guinea forward Sidiki Cherif from Fenerbahçe on a long-term contract.

The fee was not officially disclosed, although reports placed it at around £20.5 million. Cherif becomes Coventry’s eighth signing of a busy summer in which the club’s expenditure has reportedly exceeded £90 million.

The two arrivals provide Lampard with further attacking options as Coventry attempt to establish themselves in the Premier League rather than simply enjoy their return.

Celtic begin Champions League play-off

Celtic’s route towards the Champions League league phase continues on Wednesday evening with the first leg of their play-off against LASK.

The Scottish side host the Austrian champions at Celtic Park before travelling to Linz for the return match on 26 August.

Celtic entered the tie after scoring ten goals and conceding only once across their opening three competitive matches. Their latest result was a 4-0 Scottish League Cup victory over Dundee United.

LASK have also begun their domestic season strongly and will provide a considerably more demanding test. The Austrian club have demonstrated a particular threat after half-time, making a positive opening result in Glasgow especially important for Celtic.

With the Premier League beginning on Friday and another complete EFL programme following over the weekend, the relatively quiet opening days of the week have provided the final pause before the domestic season gathers full momentum.
