Ten-Man City Win in Manchester Derby as Rangers Rout Celtic

Manchester City and Rangers claimed the weekend’s biggest derby victories, while Brighton hit five, Arsenal maintained their perfect Premier League start and the Championship delivered goals at both ends of the country.

There was also a five-goal statement from Chelsea in the Women’s Super League, seven-goal thrillers in the Championship and League One, and significant results across Wales and Northern Ireland.

Ten-man Manchester City win at Old Trafford

Manchester City overcame Phil Foden’s first-half dismissal to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the 199th Manchester derby.

Foden was shown a straight red card in the 22nd minute following a challenge on Bruno Fernandes, but United could not make their numerical advantage count. Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal on the hour, with an initial offside decision overturned after VAR ruled that Patrick Dorgu had played him onside.

Earlier on Sunday, Brighton & Hove Albion swept aside ten-man Coventry City with a 5-0 victory at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring before goals from Malick Yalcouyé, Pascal Gross, Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari completed the rout. Dunk’s spectacular long-range strike was the pick of them.

Arsenal maintain their perfect start

Arsenal had goalkeeper David Raya to thank for a crucial turning point in their 2-0 victory at Sunderland on Saturday evening.

Raya saved Enzo Le Fée’s penalty before Bruno Guimarães broke the deadlock just two minutes later with his first Arsenal goal. Bukayo Saka converted a stoppage-time penalty after Reinildo Mandava received a second yellow card.

Elsewhere, promoted Hull City continued their unbeaten start by drawing 2-2 at Chelsea. Mohamed Belloumi scored twice for the visitors, with João Pedro rescuing a point for Chelsea after Hull had taken the lead.

Fulham collected their first point of the campaign with a goalless draw at Liverpool, while Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a first league goal continued following another 0-0 draw against Everton.

Ipswich Town earned a dramatic 3-2 victory at Crystal Palace, where Zian Flemming struck a 90th-minute winner after Palace had Axel Disasi sent off. Nottingham Forest also won away from home, beating Aston Villa 2-1 through Igor Jesus’s late goal.

Wolves leave it late as Championship delivers more drama

Raúl Jiménez struck in the 90th minute to give Wolverhampton Wanderers a 1-0 victory at Sheffield United in Sunday’s only Championship match.

A tight contest appeared destined to finish goalless until Jiménez converted Tommy Doyle’s late delivery, earning Wolves all three points at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United 0-1 Wolves.

West Ham United had started the Championship weekend with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Wrexham on Friday night. Six different players found the net as Jarrod Bowen, Joël Piroe, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Valentín Castellanos, Mohamadou Kanté and Manor Solomon contributed to West Ham’s fourth successive league win.

The result returned the Hammers to the top of the division and represented Wrexham’s heaviest defeat since their rise through the leagues began. West Ham 6-0 Wrexham.

The most entertaining Championship game on Saturday came at the Riverside, where Middlesbrough edged Norwich City 4-3. Boro raced into a 3-1 lead inside 36 minutes, with Sebastian Berhalter scoring twice, but Norwich fought back to level before Ashley Phillips grabbed a stoppage-time winner. Southampton beat Bristol City 4-1, while Swansea City produced a strong home performance to defeat Burnley 3-1. Blackburn Rovers were 3-1 winners against Millwall and Birmingham City earned a 2-1 victory at Derby County.

Stoke City won 2-1 at Watford, Lincoln City edged Preston North End 1-0 and Bolton Wanderers defeated Cardiff City by the same score. West Bromwich Albion drew 1-1 with Queens Park Rangers, while Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth finished goalless.

Seven-goal thriller at Stockport

Leicester City survived a spirited Stockport County comeback to win 4-3 in League One.

The visitors established a 4-1 advantage before Stockport scored twice to set up a tense finish. John Lundstram marked his Leicester debut with what proved to be the winning goal, providing a welcome result for manager Russell Martin. Stockport 3-4 Leicester report.

Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United enjoyed comfortable 3-0 victories over Barnsley and Burton Albion respectively. Wycombe Wanderers won 3-2 at Leyton Orient, while Bradford City defeated Notts County 1-0.

Cambridge United beat Reading 2-1 and AFC Wimbledon edged Doncaster Rovers 1-0. Blackpool drew 2-2 with Bromley, MK Dons and Peterborough United finished 1-1, and there were goalless draws between Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic and between Mansfield Town and Huddersfield Town. York lead the way in League Two

York City recorded League Two’s biggest win of the weekend, beating ten-man Swindon Town 4-0. Alex Newby scored twice, with Ollie Banks and Ollie Pearce also on target after Mitchell Clark had been sent off for the visitors. York 4-0 Swindon.

Rotherham United and Salford City produced a six-goal thriller. Salford led 2-0 before Rotherham turned the match around to go 3-2 ahead, but Macaulay Langstaff’s penalty earned the visitors a 3-3 draw despite Abraham Odoh’s dismissal.

Cheltenham Town came from behind to win 3-1 at Crawley Town, while Grimsby Town beat ten-man Bristol Rovers 2-0. Gillingham also won 2-0 against Tranmere Rovers, with Shrewsbury Town defeating Northampton Town by the same score.

Barnet beat Accrington Stanley 2-1, Chesterfield won 2-1 at Oldham Athletic and Port Vale edged Exeter City 1-0. Walsall and Rochdale drew 0-0, with Colchester United versus Crewe Alexandra and Newport County versus Fleetwood Town both finishing 1-1. League Two results.

Woking and Forest Green hit four or more

Woking produced the outstanding attacking display in the National League, sweeping Altrincham aside 5-1. Woking’s match report confirmed a much-needed emphatic victory for the Cards.

Forest Green Rovers beat Gateshead 4-0, while AFC Fylde recorded an impressive 4-1 victory at Yeovil Town. Halifax Town were 3-0 winners against Hornchurch.

Wealdstone, Aldershot Town and Scunthorpe United all collected away victories. Harrogate Town beat Tamworth 3-1, while Worthing drew 2-2 with Barrow and Carlisle United shared the same score with Southend United.

Rangers make an Old Firm statement

Rangers secured the weekend’s most emphatic derby victory by beating Celtic 3-0 in their Premier Sports Cup quarter-final at Ibrox.

Captain Dan Neil scored twice, with Kevin Kelsy adding the other goal as Rangers inflicted Celtic’s first domestic defeat of the season. The performance provided an important early boost for manager Derek McInnes and booked Rangers a semi-final against Aberdeen. Read the Rangers v Celtic report.

Aberdeen advanced after a penalty shootout against Kilmarnock. Their quarter-final finished 1-1 after extra time, with Aberdeen holding on despite Daniel Happe’s dismissal.

Hearts began the cup weekend with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Stenhousemuir. JJ Williams, Rogers Mato and Yan Dhanda scored the goals. Hibernian followed with a 3-0 win at Ross County on Saturday.

Chelsea hit five in the Women’s Super League

Chelsea delivered a powerful early-season statement by beating Manchester United 5-0 on Sunday.

Arsenal were held to a surprising 0-0 draw by newly promoted Crystal Palace. Everton beat Charlton Athletic 1-0, while Liverpool drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City shared four goals with Brighton.

Wins for the leading sides in Wales

The New Saints won 2-0 at Airbus UK Broughton in Friday’s Cymru Premier programme, while Caernarfon Town recorded a commanding 5-0 victory at Ammanford.

Barry Town United beat Llandudno 4-1 and Haverfordwest County overcame Briton Ferry Llansawel 3-1. Penybont won 1-0 at Trefelin BGC, Cambrian United defeated Holywell Town 2-1 and Flint Town United drew 1-1 with Cardiff Met.

Larne and Linfield win in Northern Ireland

Coleraine began the Northern Ireland Premiership weekend with a 3-2 victory over Ballymena United on Friday evening.

Larne then won 2-0 at Portadown on Saturday, with Tomas Cosgrove and Sean Graham scoring the goals. Linfield left it late to beat Dungannon Swifts 1-0, Josh McClean making the breakthrough in the 82nd minute.

Weekend verdict

Manchester City’s ability to win with ten men and Rangers’ commanding Old Firm performance supplied Sunday’s defining stories. Arsenal remain perfect at the top of the Premier League, while Brighton’s five-goal display underlined their excellent start.

West Ham produced the Championship’s most emphatic result, Middlesbrough and Leicester survived seven-goal thrillers, and Chelsea’s five-goal WSL victory provided another major Sunday statement.
