UK Football Round-Up: 12-18 October 2026

Manchester City kept their perfect Premier League start intact, Celtic responded emphatically to a European setback, and Coleraine produced one of the week’s great comebacks. There was plenty beyond the top flights, too, with a dramatic Welsh Cup tie and an eventful week for England’s women.

City stay perfect, but Arsenal keep pace

Manchester City made it seven league wins from seven on Saturday, although Ipswich Town pushed them hard in a 3–2 contest. Erling Haaland scored twice. Arsenal stayed three points behind the leaders on Sunday when Noni Madueke’s late goal secured a 1–0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Brighton supplied the weekend’s most spectacular moment. Diego Gómez scored from inside his own half as they overwhelmed Crystal Palace 5–0. Elsewhere, Chelsea beat Everton 2–0 through a Pedro Neto double, Liverpool came from behind to defeat nine-man Brentford 2–1, and Leeds United held Manchester United to a 1–1 draw.

The week had begun with a landmark result for Coventry City. Their 4–1 victory over Newcastle United on Monday was their first home win in the Premier League for 25 years. Newcastle’s difficult week continued with a 1–0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday.

European nights bring extremes

The Champions League produced contrasting results for UK clubs. Arsenal beat Lille 3–0 on Tuesday, while Manchester United lost 2–0 at Atlético Madrid. Wednesday was wilder: Liverpool won 6–3 away to LASK and Aston Villa thrashed Fenerbahçe 6–0, but Manchester City fell 4–2 to Paris Saint-Germain.

In the Europa League, Bournemouth marked their first European home match with a 3–0 win over Sturm Graz. Sunderland snatched a 2–1 victory at Torreense with a stoppage-time winner, while Celtic lost 4–1 at Benfica and Crystal Palace were beaten 3–2 by Lyon. Brighton began their Conference League campaign with a 4–0 win over Kauno Žalgiris; Hearts drew 1–1 with Nordsjælland.

Celtic’s emphatic answer in Scotland

Celtic’s response to defeat in Lisbon was a 7–1 demolition of Hearts on Sunday. They led 5–1 at half-time, with Callum Osmand and Benjamin Nygren each scoring twice, and finished the weekend four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Rangers had missed an opportunity to apply pressure a day earlier, drawing 2–2 with Dundee.

Goals and drama across the leagues

West Ham United’s 6–0 Championship win at Lincoln City was shaped by two Lincoln red cards inside the opening 23 minutes. By Saturday, West Ham had added a 1–0 win at Swansea City, while Wrexham beat Preston North End 4–1. In League One, MK Dons claimed their first league victory of the season by beating Luton Town 2–1. Salford City remained top of League Two after the weekend’s matches.

Cup tension in Wales and a comeback in Northern Ireland

The Welsh Cup gave Penybont a scare on Sunday. They came through 3–2 away to Afan Lido to reach the next round, while Haverfordwest County recorded a more comfortable 4–0 win over Cardiff Corinthians.

Northern Ireland’s standout result came on Friday night. Premiership leaders Coleraine trailed champions Larne by two goals at Inver Park, then fought back to win 3–2. Linfield were held 2–2 by Carrick Rangers on Saturday, leaving Coleraine’s comeback as a particularly valuable result in the early title race.

Lionesses progress as WSL leaders hold firm

England’s women advanced to the next round of World Cup qualifying play-offs with a 5–0 win over Greece on Tuesday, completing an 8–1 aggregate victory. Alessia Russo and Lauren James both scored twice.

In the Women’s Super League, Manchester City protected their perfect record with a 3–2 win over Brighton despite conceding twice after racing into a three-goal lead. Chelsea stayed close behind by beating Tottenham 6–2, with Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter each scoring twice.
