Introduction
East Kilbride Football Club represents one of the most remarkable modern success stories in Scottish football. Based in the South Lanarkshire town of East Kilbride, the club progressed from amateur football to the Scottish Professional Football League in only fifteen years.
Known as “The Kilby”, East Kilbride play in navy and gold and stage their home matches at K-Park in Calderglen Country Park. Although football clubs bearing the town’s name existed in earlier generations, the present organisation was established in 2010 through the coming together of Stewartfield FC and Jackton Boys Club.
East Kilbride entered the newly created Lowland League in 2013 and quickly became one of its leading clubs. Multiple league titles and cup successes followed, alongside an extraordinary sequence of victories that briefly brought international attention to K-Park.
The club finally reached the SPFL in 2025 and immediately won Scottish League Two, earning a second consecutive promotion and a place in Scottish League One for the 2026–27 season. It was a rapid ascent for a club that had been created only sixteen years earlier.
History
The present East Kilbride FC was formed in May 2010. The new organisation brought together Stewartfield FC and Jackton Boys Club, with other local teams subsequently becoming part of the developing club structure.
East Kilbride initially competed in amateur football and won the Scottish Amateur Football League Division One title in 2012–13. That same year, the club was selected as one of the founder members of the Lowland Football League, which had been created as part of the developing Scottish football pyramid.
Full membership of the Scottish Football Association followed in 2014, allowing East Kilbride to enter the Scottish Cup. Their first nationally prominent cup run arrived during the 2015–16 season. Victories over Forres Mechanics and Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale earned a fifth-round tie against Celtic. The match was moved to Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium, where a crowd of 7,767 watched Celtic win 2–0.
Later in 2016, East Kilbride attracted international attention by recording 27 consecutive competitive victories. The run took them beyond the 26-match sequence achieved by Ajax in 1971–72. Ajax recognised the achievement and sent East Kilbride a crate of wine as a congratulatory gift.
Managed by Martin Lauchlan, East Kilbride won their first Lowland League championship in 2016–17. However, promotion was denied when Cowdenbeath defeated them on penalties in the SPFL play-off final. A second title followed in 2018–19, but the club was eliminated by Cove Rangers in the pyramid play-offs.
After winning the Lowland League again in 2023–24, East Kilbride reached another promotion final but lost 5–3 on aggregate to Stranraer. They returned even stronger the following season, securing a fourth Lowland League championship and defeating Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic 3–1 on aggregate to enter the SPFL for the first time.
East Kilbride’s momentum continued during 2025–26. The newly promoted club won Scottish League Two at its first attempt, completing back-to-back promotions and advancing to League One.
Stadium
East Kilbride play at the K-Park Training Academy, commonly known simply as K-Park. The ground is situated in Calderglen Country Park and has been the club’s home since opening in 2011.
K-Park is a compact, modern venue built around an artificial playing surface. Its covered accommodation keeps spectators close to the action, giving matches an intimate atmosphere quite different from that of Scotland’s older and larger football grounds. The wider complex provides training and community facilities as well as a home for the senior team.
The original facility was designed with a capacity of approximately 685 spectators, including 388 seats. The club’s rise into the SPFL has inevitably increased the demands placed upon the ground, leading to improvement and expansion plans as East Kilbride prepare for football at progressively higher levels.
K-Park has witnessed numerous defining moments, including Lowland League title celebrations and the first leg of the club’s successful 2025 promotion play-off against Bonnyrigg Rose. Larger Scottish Cup fixtures have occasionally been moved elsewhere, most notably the 2016 meeting with Celtic at the Excelsior Stadium.
Achievements
East Kilbride accumulated an impressive collection of honours during their journey through amateur, Lowland League and SPFL football.
Their principal achievements include:
- Scottish League Two champions: 2025–26
- East of Scotland Qualifying Cup winners: 2015–16 and 2017–18
- Scottish Amateur Football League Division One champions: 2012–13
The 27-match winning sequence achieved in 2016 also occupies a special place in the club’s history. Although not a conventional trophy, it gave East Kilbride a degree of worldwide recognition rarely experienced by a club operating outside Scotland’s national divisions.
Winning League Two in 2025–26 was arguably the greatest achievement of all. Rather than merely consolidating after promotion from the Lowland League, East Kilbride immediately claimed another championship and moved directly into the third tier.
Famous Players & Managers
Several players became closely associated with East Kilbride during the club’s rise through the Scottish football pyramid.
Sean Winter was one of the most prominent figures of the Lowland League era. A prolific and long-serving attacking player, he passed 100 appearances for the club and scored the late winner against Spartans that secured the 2018–19 league championship.
Defender Craig Howie joined East Kilbride as a teenager and became the first player to reach 100 appearances for the club. His performances earned him a move into the SPFL with Clyde, making him an early example of K-Park providing a pathway into the national divisions.
Goalkeeper Matt McGinley, defender Barry Russell, midfielder Martin McBride and forward Craig Malcolm were among the other influential members of East Kilbride’s successful Lowland League sides.
Cameron Elliott played an especially important role in the breakthrough 2024–25 season. He finished as the Lowland League’s leading scorer with 25 goals and scored twice in the first leg of the promotion final against Bonnyrigg Rose.
Among the club’s managers, Martin Lauchlan oversaw the record winning sequence and the first Lowland League championship. Former Scotland international Billy Stark brought considerable experience from senior football and Scotland’s youth system during his time at K-Park.
Mick Kennedy became manager in 2023 and led East Kilbride through the most successful period in their history. Under his management, the club won consecutive Lowland League titles, gained promotion to the SPFL and then captured the League Two championship.
Supporters & Culture
East Kilbride is unusual among Scotland’s larger towns because it did not inherit a nationally established senior football club from the Victorian era. The modern town grew rapidly after being designated Scotland’s first new town in 1947, with many residents arriving from Glasgow and bringing existing football loyalties with them.
East Kilbride FC has therefore had to build its support and identity rather than inherit them. Its community foundations, youth structure and location within Calderglen Country Park have helped the club establish a local following, particularly among families and younger supporters.
The nickname “The Kilby” reflects the club’s connection with the town. Its navy-and-gold identity has become increasingly visible as success on the field has drawn larger crowds and greater attention to K-Park.
Promotion to the SPFL was an important moment not only for the football club but for the town itself. The celebrations following the 2025 victory over Bonnyrigg Rose demonstrated how quickly East Kilbride had developed a recognisable supporter culture. Winning another promotion twelve months later strengthened the sense that the club had finally established a place on Scotland’s national football map.
The Club Today
East Kilbride entered the 2026–27 season as a Scottish League One club following two consecutive promotions. Their first match at that level produced an emphatic 5–1 home victory over Queen of the South, providing an appropriately dramatic beginning to another chapter in the club’s development.
The club’s rise creates fresh challenges. K-Park must continue to develop, attendances need to grow and the football operation must adapt to stronger opposition. Nevertheless, East Kilbride’s record suggests that the club is unlikely to be satisfied merely with survival.
Its combination of community foundations and senior ambitions gives East Kilbride a distinctive position within Scottish football. In little more than a decade, The Kilby progressed from amateur competition to League One, collecting championships, cups and a celebrated winning record along the way.
For one of Scotland’s youngest senior clubs, East Kilbride have already produced a surprisingly eventful history. Their task now is to turn that rapid rise into lasting success.
