UK Football Round-Up: City Stay Perfect as Rangers Win Again

Manchester City survived a remarkable Brian Brobbey hat-trick to preserve their perfect Premier League start, Rangers won at Celtic Park for their second Old Firm victory in eight days and Brighton inflicted Arsenal’s first league defeat of the season. There were also memorable European wins for Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Sunderland, a difficult night for Manchester United in the League Cup and no shortage of drama further down the pyramid.

Manchester City win an eight-goal thriller

Manchester City made it five Premier League wins from five, but their 5–3 victory over Sunderland was anything but routine. Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo put City in control, with Semenyo scoring twice, before Erling Haaland settled an extraordinary contest late on.

Brobbey’s hat-trick meant Sunderland remained in the match far longer than Pep Guardiola would have liked. The visitors also felt they should have had a penalty for a handball by Elliot Anderson while the score was 3–2, but City survived the scare and head into the international break as the only side with a perfect league record.

Arsenal’s unbeaten start ended emphatically on the south coast. Brighton followed their 5–0 win at Coventry by beating the Gunners 3–0, with Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andrés on target. It completed an excellent week for Brighton, who also knocked Manchester United out of the League Cup.

Chelsea endured an equally uncomfortable weekend. Brentford scored three second-half goals through Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho to claim a 3–0 west London derby victory. It was Brentford’s first home win over Chelsea since 1938 and left the visitors without a win in three league matches.

Tottenham’s wait for a first league victory continued after a 3–2 home defeat by Aston Villa. Spurs scored twice in the closing stages, including a 98th-minute effort from Jan Paul van Hecke, but Villa’s earlier goals from Ebrima Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano Buendía proved decisive.

Liverpool won 1–0 at Bournemouth through Alexander Isak, while Matheus Cunha’s 89th-minute equaliser rescued Manchester United in a 1–1 draw at Fulham. Coventry collected their first points of the season with a 1–0 victory at Nottingham Forest, Everton edged Ipswich 1–0 and Newcastle responded to Monday’s heavy defeat at Leeds by beating Hull 2–1. Leeds had opened the week with a convincing 4–1 win over Newcastle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring twice, but were held 0–0 by Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Cup exits for Manchester United and West Ham

The League Cup third round produced difficult nights for two of the competition’s bigger names. Manchester United scored twice in the opening eight minutes against Brighton but still lost 3–2 at Old Trafford. Kostoulas, Gross and Maxim De Cuyper completed the turnaround for the visitors.

West Ham also went out after surrendering a lead in a 3–2 home defeat by Fulham. Liverpool beat Tottenham 3–1, while Arsenal’s 16-year-old Max Dowman scored twice in a 4–2 win at Ipswich. Manchester City’s youngsters then took centre stage in a 5–0 victory over Norwich, with 17-year-old Floyd Samba scoring twice on his debut.

Fleetwood were the only lower-division side to eliminate Championship opposition, beating Sheffield United 1–0. Peterborough needed a 7–6 penalty shoot-out victory after a 3–3 draw with Barnsley, while Everton, Brentford and Aston Villa also progressed.

Bournemouth make their mark in Europe

Bournemouth’s first European match ended with an impressive 2–1 Europa League victory away to Real Sociedad. Early goals from Justin Kluivert and Rayan gave the Cherries the ideal start, and goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic made important late saves after Sergio Gómez had reduced the deficit.

Crystal Palace were even more emphatic, beating Lech Poznan 4–0 at Selhurst Park, while Sunderland marked their return to European competition with a 1–0 win over AZ Alkmaar. Enzo Le Fée’s penalty supplied the decisive goal at the Stadium of Light.

Celtic were the only British side to lose in the opening round, going down 3–1 at home to Ferencváros. It was the middle instalment of a punishing eight-day spell that began and ended with Old Firm defeats.

Late goals dominate the Championship

Bolton and Norwich supplied the Championship’s game of the weekend, Bolton winning 4–3 at Carrow Road after a contest in which the lead changed hands repeatedly. Atsuki Ito struck the winner in the 72nd minute.

Late goals shaped much of Saturday’s action. Malanda earned Middlesbrough a 2–2 draw at Birmingham in the 88th minute, while Fuseini levelled for Derby at Burnley in stoppage time. Paul Smyth completed QPR’s recovery from 2–0 down against Preston with a 90th-minute equaliser.

West Ham also fought back from two goals behind to draw 2–2 at Millwall, with N’Golo Kanté and Konstantinos Mavropanos scoring six minutes apart. Stoke went one better, turning a 1–0 deficit into a 2–1 win over Sheffield United through late goals from John McGlynn and Conor Gallagher.

Wrexham claimed a 2–1 victory over Southampton thanks to Nico Schlotterbeck’s 89th-minute own goal. Swansea won 2–1 at Lincoln, Cardiff beat Charlton 3–1 and Wolves defeated West Brom 1–0 in the Black Country derby. Earlier in the week, Lincoln had earned a notable 1–0 win at Bristol City.

Plymouth hit four as Bradford win at Luton

Plymouth produced League One’s biggest score of the weekend, winning 4–2 at Blackpool. Bradford made a fast start at Luton and protected Bobby Pointon’s fourth-minute goal to take all three points, while Doncaster won 2–0 at Peterborough.

Reading beat Notts County 2–0 through a Jack Marriott double, Bromley defeated Huddersfield 2–1 and Wycombe won 1–0 at Wigan. Barnsley drew 1–1 with Leicester, Burton shared four goals with Mansfield and the Wimbledon-MK Dons meeting finished goalless.

In League Two, Barnet beat Fleetwood 3–1, while Gillingham, Grimsby and Walsall all recorded convincing home wins without conceding. Chesterfield defeated York 2–0, Rochdale beat Oldham by the same score and Rotherham earned a 1–0 away victory at Northampton.

Southend supplied the National League’s standout result, winning 6–1 at Gateshead as Sam Austin completed a first-half hat-trick. Boreham Wood beat Harrogate 4–1, Boston United won 3–1 at Forest Green and Yeovil defeated Solihull Moors 4–1. Halifax and Sutton traded goals in the fourth and fifth minutes of added time in a dramatic 1–1 draw, while Tamworth scored in the 97th minute to beat Wealdstone 2–1.

Rangers win again as Celtic’s week unravels

Ryan Naderi’s 33rd-minute goal gave Rangers a 1–0 win at Celtic Park and moved them to within two points of their rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership. It was Rangers’ second Old Firm victory in eight days following the previous Sunday’s 3–0 League Cup success.

For Celtic, defeat completed a damaging week that also included the 3–1 Europa League loss to Ferencváros. Rangers, by contrast, have found momentum at a crucial time and defended their lead impressively in a typically intense derby.

Aberdeen began the domestic week with a 4–0 win at Motherwell and then drew 1–1 at Hibernian. Dundee United raced into a three-goal half-time lead at St Mirren and won 3–0, Dundee beat Motherwell 2–1 and Hearts needed an 86th-minute Stephen Kingsley equaliser to draw 1–1 at Kilmarnock. St Johnstone also struck deep into stoppage time to secure a 1–1 draw with Falkirk.

Nine for Caernarfon in a remarkable Welsh round

Caernarfon Town produced the biggest score anywhere in Britain’s senior leagues, sweeping aside Cambrian United 9–1. Nine different Caernarfon players found the net in a remarkable display.

Colwyn Bay’s 5–2 win over Barry Town was another eye-catching result, while Penybont maintained their unbeaten start by winning 5–1 at Ammanford. Airbus beat Flint Town 4–1, Connah’s Quay edged Cardiff Met 1–0 and Haverfordwest defeated Holywell by the same score.

The New Saints had already beaten Flint 5–0 in midweek and extended their winning run with a dramatic 2–1 victory over Llandudno. Rhys Hughes equalised in the 78th minute before Rory Holden found the winner in the sixth minute of added time.

Larne hit five in Northern Ireland

Paul O’Neill scored a hat-trick as Larne won 5–2 at Carrick Rangers, with Dan Bent converting two penalties. Coleraine enjoyed a productive week, following a 2–1 win at Glentoran with a 1–0 victory over Limavady United, while Linfield beat Crusaders 1–0.

Limavady had supplied the midweek highlight when Joe McGonigle completed a hat-trick inside 23 minutes of a 3–1 win over Bangor. Glentoran won 2–1 at Cliftonville and Bangor bounced back to defeat Portadown 3–1.

Tottenham score seven in the WSL

Tottenham produced the Women’s Super League’s most emphatic performance, winning 7–0 at Crystal Palace. Olivia Holdt scored a 24-minute second-half hat-trick and Victoria Pelova added two more late on.

Arsenal needed a 95th-minute equaliser from Smilla Holmberg to earn a 1–1 draw against Manchester United. Manchester City beat Liverpool 4–2, with Lauren Hemp scoring twice, while Chelsea continued their recovery from the opening-week draw by beating Birmingham City 2–0.

London City Lionesses won 4–1 at Charlton, Everton edged West Ham through a stoppage-time own goal and Brighton drew 1–1 with Aston Villa after Wilms equalised in the 89th minute.

A week of warning shots

City’s five straight league wins make them the early side to catch, but the week also demonstrated how quickly the picture can shift. Brighton dismantled Arsenal, Brentford exposed Chelsea and Aston Villa deepened Tottenham’s difficult start. Rangers have transformed the mood around the Scottish title race, while Bournemouth’s fearless European debut suggested they will not merely be making up the numbers.
