Big comebacks, late drama and goals across the UK

If you like your football weekends busy, this one delivered. Arsenal had to come from behind against Chelsea, Everton somehow rescued a point from Manchester United in stoppage time, and Crystal Palace won a five-goal scrap at Fulham. There were statement victories lower down the pyramid too, with Stoke City, Millwall, Coleraine and Kidderminster Harriers all enjoying memorable afternoons.

For a website that keeps tabs on clubs from every corner of the UK, there was plenty to unpack. Some teams made a fast start and never looked back. Others left it very late. Here is the story of the weekend, from the Premier League down to the National League, with stops in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland along the way.

Arsenal settle after an early Chelsea shock

Two minutes in, Arsenal were already in trouble. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead at the Emirates, giving the visitors a dream start and leaving the home crowd wondering what sort of afternoon lay ahead. Arsenal did not panic, though. They took a little time to find their stride, moved the ball with more purpose and gradually pushed Chelsea back.

Kai Havertz levelled matters in the 25th minute, which changed the feel of the game completely. Chelsea could no longer sit on their early lead, while Arsenal suddenly looked far more comfortable. The teams went in level at half-time, but the hosts did not need long to finish the turnaround. Martin Ødegaard made it 2–1 five minutes after the restart.

There was no late flourish after that, just a solid job of seeing the match out. Arsenal protected the lead, took the three points and made it three league wins from three. Chelsea, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat of the campaign after winning their opening two matches. For Arsenal, this was the sort of win that tends to please supporters: not perfect, certainly, but calm and convincing after a bad start.

Everton refuse to accept defeat

For more than 80 minutes, Everton’s meeting with Manchester United looked fairly straightforward on the scoresheet. The first half finished goalless, Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead immediately after the break and the visitors appeared to have the game where they wanted it.

Then everything happened at once. Tyrique George pulled Everton level in the 83rd minute, only for Benjamin Šeško to restore United’s lead five minutes later. That looked like the winner. Everton had other ideas. Six minutes into added time, Ainsley Maitland-Niles found the equaliser and the Hill Dickinson Stadium erupted.

United will wonder how two points slipped away so late. Everton will simply remember the noise and the refusal to give in. Three of the game’s four goals arrived from the 83rd minute onwards, turning an ordinary-looking contest into one of the weekend’s best finishes.

City grind it out, while Palace win the thriller

Manchester City did not run away with their match against Coventry City, but they did what strong sides so often do: scored, defended the lead and moved on. Erling Haaland’s 26th-minute goal was enough for a 1–0 victory and a third win from three league games. It was not a spectacular scoreline, yet clean sheets and narrow wins matter just as much over a long season.

There was much more chaos at Craven Cottage, where Crystal Palace beat Fulham 3–2. Josh King gave Fulham the lead after 11 minutes, Tyrick Mitchell equalised, and Carlos Palacios restored the home side’s advantage before the interval. Mitchell struck again nine minutes into the second half, making it 2–2, before Ben Chilwell completed the Palace comeback in the 77th minute.

Newcastle United also left it late, with Jacob Ramsey scoring in the 88th minute to secure a 2–2 draw against Bournemouth. Brentford drew 1–1 with Sunderland, Brighton shared the same scoreline with Leeds United, and both Hull City versus Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest versus Tottenham Hotspur ended goalless. Liverpool had started the weekend on Friday night with a 2–0 win at Ipswich Town, Alexander Isak scoring twice inside the opening nine minutes.

Stoke blow Charlton away in 25 minutes

Stoke City’s 4–0 win over Charlton Athletic was effectively settled before some supporters had finished their half-time refreshments. Justin Devenny opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 15 minutes. Ethan Galbraith added a second seven minutes later, and George Hirst made it three in the 25th minute.

Charlton could not slow Stoke down, and Devenny scored his second five minutes before half-time. That was the last goal of the afternoon, although the damage had already been done. Stoke enjoyed 62 per cent of the possession and put eight efforts on target, but the number that really mattered was four goals in a devastating 25-minute spell.

Millwall also won 4–0, although their route to victory over Bolton Wanderers was very different. Caleb Taylor scored the only goal of the first half, and the game remained in the balance until the closing stages. Lyndon Dykes then struck twice, with Camiel Neghli adding a fourth in stoppage time. Four goals on paper; a late landslide in practice.

West Ham United beat Derby County 3–0 and Norwich City won 3–1 at Sheffield United. Bristol City took a 2–1 victory at Burnley, Preston North End beat Blackburn Rovers by the same score, and Portsmouth overcame Cardiff City 2–0. Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion each collected 1–0 wins, while Birmingham City drew 2–2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Lincoln City held Southampton 1–1, and Swansea City versus Wrexham finished 0–0.

Celtic come through a lively afternoon in Paisley

Celtic’s 2–1 win at St Mirren was anything but a quiet away day. The hosts managed 17 attempts and gave the league leaders plenty to think about, but Celtic found a way through and maintained their perfect start. Five games, five wins and 15 points already: that is the sort of early pace everyone else has to notice.

Rangers stayed in touch with a 1–0 win over Motherwell at Ibrox. Aberdeen and Kilmarnock cancelled each other out in a 0–0 draw, while Dundee United and Falkirk finished 1–1. Sunday brought two closely fought 2–1 results: Hearts beat Dundee and St Johnstone got the better of Hibernian.

Caernarfon find another gear after the break

Caernarfon Town’s 3–0 victory over Flint Town United looked comfortable by the final whistle, although it took until the 45th minute for Adam Clarke to break the deadlock. He scored again seven minutes after half-time, and Evans added the third in the 63rd minute. Once the first goal went in, Caernarfon did not let the visitors settle.

Airbus UK Broughton won 2–0 at Briton Ferry Llansawel, while Llandudno beat Ammanford by the same scoreline. Cardiff Met drew 2–2 with Cambrian United. Connah’s Quay Nomads versus Haverfordwest County and Holywell Town versus Trefelin both ended 1–1. Penybont edged Colwyn Bay 1–0, and The New Saints needed an 88th-minute goal to beat Barry Town United.

Coleraine lead a goal-filled Northern Irish round

Coleraine enjoyed the biggest NIFL Premiership win of the weekend, putting four past Crusaders in a 4–1 success. Cliftonville beat Portadown 3–1, while Dungannon Swifts travelled to Limavady United and returned with a 2–0 victory. Linfield kept things tighter, edging Carrick Rangers 1–0.

Bangor and Ballymena United shared four goals in a 2–2 draw. Larne had opened the programme on Friday with a 2–1 win over Glentoran. With Coleraine scoring freely and Dungannon and Linfield both collecting clean-sheet victories, the early table is already beginning to develop a few interesting storylines.

Kidderminster enjoy the road trip

Kidderminster Harriers produced the National League’s standout away result, beating Wealdstone 4–1. Southend United and Yeovil Town served up the division’s five-goal game, with Southend coming out on top 3–2. Barrow beat Sutton United 3–0, Harrogate Town won 2–0 at Scunthorpe United, and Boreham Wood defeated Carlisle United 2–1.

Forest Green Rovers won 1–0 at Hornchurch, while Aldershot Town and Hartlepool United also picked up 1–0 victories. AFC Fylde drew 2–2 with Worthing, Tamworth shared the same scoreline with Boston United, and Gateshead versus Solihull Moors finished 1–1. From Arsenal’s patient comeback to Everton’s last-gasp equaliser and Stoke’s first-half blitz, it was a weekend with a little bit of everything—and plenty for supporters to talk about before the next set of fixtures.
