Bolton Wanderers celebrated their return to the Championship with a derby victory, Luton Town produced a remarkable second-half comeback at Reading and York City marked their return to the EFL with a five-goal thriller. Meanwhile, several Premier League clubs completed their preparations for the new campaign, with Brentford recording the most emphatic result of the day.
Bolton celebrate winning Championship return
Bolton Wanderers made an immediate impression on their return to the Championship by defeating Lancashire rivals Preston North End 2-1.

Middlesbrough also began with a 2-1 win, although they were made to work for it by newly promoted Lincoln City. Appearing in the second tier for the first time in 65 years, Lincoln led through Adam Reach before debutant Will Lankshear scored twice for Middlesbrough. His second goal arrived in stoppage time and ended Lincoln’s 29-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
