UKFootball Round-Up: 27 September 2026

The first extended international window of the season brought a pause to much of the men’s domestic programme, but there was still no shortage of drama. England pushed the world champions before falling short at Wembley, Northern Ireland celebrated a historic victory in Georgia and Wales endured a difficult return to the top tier of the Nations League.

There was also a full Women’s Super League programme, the opening round of the Women’s Champions League and important domestic action further down the pyramid.

England fall short in Wembley thriller

England’s Nations League campaign began with a pulsating 3-2 defeat against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday.

Lamine Yamal punished an early defensive error to give Spain the lead after only two minutes, but England produced an excellent response. Anthony Gordon completed a sweeping counter-attack to equalise before Harry Kane headed Thomas Tuchel’s side in front four minutes later.

Kane then had the chance to establish a two-goal advantage after the interval, only to slip and send his penalty against the crossbar. Spain took full advantage. Álex Baena equalised on the hour and Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner with 16 minutes remaining.

England showed that they could trouble the world’s leading side, but individual errors and Kane’s missed penalty proved costly. The victory extended Spain’s unbeaten sequence to 39 matches and left England third in their Nations League group after the opening round.

Charles brothers make Northern Irish history

Northern Ireland produced arguably the result of the week, defeating Georgia 1-0 in Tbilisi on Friday evening.

Goalkeeper Pierce Charles saved a second-half penalty from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before his brother Shea Charles supplied the decisive moment in the ninth minute of stoppage time. The midfielder met Trai Hume’s delivery and powered the ball beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili.

It was Northern Ireland’s first away victory in the Nations League and their first win at League B level in 11 attempts. Michael O’Neill’s side had been required to defend with resilience, but the late goal rewarded a determined performance and gave them an ideal start to the campaign.

Encouragement for Scotland, concern for Wales

Sébastien Pocognoli began his reign as Scotland manager with a goalless draw away to Slovenia.

Scotland created the better second-half opportunities, but found Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak in inspired form. Robbie Ure and Stephen Welsh made their senior debuts, while returning striker Oli McBurnie was denied several times. Kieron Bowie also went close after coming off the bench.

The missing goal was a frustration, but Scotland’s attacking intent and improved second-half display offered encouragement ahead of their meeting with Switzerland.

Wales, meanwhile, finished the week without a point or a goal from their first two League A fixtures.

João Félix’s deflected first-half effort gave defending Nations League champions Portugal a 1-0 victory in Lisbon on Thursday. Wales remained in the contest and Brennan Johnson struck the crossbar during an improved final quarter, but Craig Bellamy’s depleted side could not find an equaliser.

Sunday brought a 2-0 defeat in Denmark. Ben Davies turned Mikkel Damsgaard’s free-kick into his own net before Gustav Isaksen doubled the lead. Wales created occasional openings through Sorba Thomas, Brennan Johnson and Connor Roberts, but Denmark were deserved winners and Bellamy’s team now face an important home match against Norway.

A reduced EFL programme still produces late drama

Most Championship and League One games were postponed during the international window, although four League One fixtures went ahead.

Reading chose to fulfil their match at Wycombe Wanderers despite international absences and twice took the lead through Liam O’Connor and Vonnte Brown. Wycombe responded on both occasions, with Danny Ings scoring a 90th-minute equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw.

Cambridge United also struck late, Tom Bradshaw scoring in stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon. Burton Albion won 1-0 at Plymouth Argyle, while Stockport County recorded the same scoreline against Peterborough United.

League Two supplied a full afternoon of action. Salford City recorded the division’s biggest win by beating Oldham Athletic 4-1, while York City defeated Gillingham 3-0. Bristol Rovers, Cheltenham Town, Newport County and Rochdale also collected victories.

Barnet remained top despite having their match at Crawley postponed. They ended the weekend level on 15 points with Cheltenham and Bristol Rovers, with York and Walsall one point behind.

The newly renamed Jersey Mike’s Trophy had already delivered an extraordinary midweek. Its 23 Tuesday ties produced 93 goals, including a 4-3 win for Leeds United Under-21s at Barnsley and a 4-1 Crewe Alexandra victory over Aston Villa Under-21s. Accrington Stanley and Sunderland Under-21s shared six goals before Accrington won the shootout.

Scottish clubs turn to the Evolution Trophy

The Scottish Premiership was also paused, leaving the KDM Evolution Trophy to provide the main domestic programme.

Airdrieonians recorded the most emphatic result, sweeping aside Berwick Rangers 7-1. Stranraer and East Kilbride served up a seven-goal contest of their own, with Stranraer winning 4-3, while Clachnacuddin earned an entertaining 3-3 draw against Celtic B.

There was also a notable result for Clydebank, who won 2-0 away to East Fife, while Kelty Hearts edged Montrose 2-1.

The New Saints retain control in Wales

The New Saints maintained their commanding start to the Cymru Premier season with a 3-1 victory at Trefelin BGC. The champions have collected 31 points from their opening 11 matches and lead second-placed Penybont by four points.

Penybont remained in pursuit with a 2-1 win over Airbus UK Broughton, while Connah’s Quay Nomads strengthened their position in third by beating Barry Town United 4-1.

Flint Town United finally secured their first league victory of the campaign, defeating Ammanford 3-0. Colwyn Bay continued their excellent home form with a 1-0 success against Haverfordwest County, and Cambrian United survived a spirited Llandudno comeback to win a seven-goal thriller 4-3.

Linfield join Coleraine at the summit

Linfield made the biggest statement in the Northern Irish Premiership, winning 3-1 away to leaders Coleraine on Friday.

Adam Frizzell opened the scoring after nine minutes, Chris Shields doubled the advantage with a 25-yard volley and Kobei Moore made it 3-0 shortly after half-time. Matthew Shevlin’s late reply could not prevent Linfield from joining Coleraine at the top.

Jordan Jenkins scored twice as Glentoran defeated Carrick Rangers 2-0, while Owen Wardell struck seven minutes from time to give Crusaders a 2-1 win over Bangor. Ballymena United beat Portadown 2-0 and Jamie McGonigle’s fifth goal of the season secured Limavady United’s 1-0 victory over Cliftonville, condemning the Reds to a third successive defeat.

British clubs make winning European starts

All three English representatives avoided defeat as the Women’s Champions League league phase began.

Arsenal required a stoppage-time Mariona Caldentey penalty to overcome HB Køge 1-0, having struggled to convert their dominance into clear chances.

Manchester City produced the strongest comeback, recovering from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Bayern Munich. Beth Mead reduced the deficit before half-time and Carlotta Wamser scored an 86th-minute equaliser, after Bunny Shaw had seen a penalty saved.

Chelsea also opened with a 1-0 victory, Wieke Kaptein’s spectacular finish proving sufficient against Austria Wien.

Chelsea take the honours as Liverpool end derby drought

Chelsea carried their European momentum into Sunday’s meeting with Arsenal, winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Alyssa Thompson scored the decisive goal shortly before half-time as Chelsea moved to within two points of Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool celebrated their first WSL victory over Everton at Anfield after six consecutive home derby defeats in the competition. Goals from Matilda Olsson and Cornelia Kapocs secured a deserved 2-0 success and continued Liverpool’s encouraging start.

Tottenham climbed to second with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa. Victoria Pelova scored twice, with Caitlin Dijkstra and Cathinka Tandberg also on target.

Elsewhere, Manchester United beat West Ham 2-1, Birmingham City and Crystal Palace drew 3-3, and London City Lionesses continued their ambitious start with a 2-0 victory over Brighton.
