UKFootball Round-Up: 12 October 2026

Manchester City supplied the weekend’s headline result on Sunday, winning 3-0 at Liverpool to maintain their perfect Premier League start. Ryan Gravenberch’s dismissal for a second booking changed the contest, and City struck three times in 13 minutes through Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki. It was City’s sixth league win in six matches and their second successive victory at Anfield.

Arsenal had kept up the pressure on Saturday by coming from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1. James Justin put Leeds ahead, but Riccardo Calafiori equalised before substitute Bruno Guimarães scored the winner. Chelsea also made a statement with a 5-1 win over Bournemouth: Jordan Henderson scored twice and set up another on his home debut, while João Pedro added two goals.

World Cup hopes rise for three women’s teams

Friday’s first legs in the Women’s World Cup play-offs brought wins for England, Scotland and Wales. England beat Greece 3-1 in Crete, with Georgia Stanway, Maya Le Tissier and Alessia Russo scoring before the hosts pulled one back. Scotland earned a 2-0 away win over Czechia through Caroline Weir and Claire Emslie. Wales take a narrower lead into their return match after a deflected Lily Woodham corner secured a 1-0 win in Albania. All three ties conclude on Tuesday 13 October.

Northern Ireland face a much steeper task after losing their home first leg 4-0 to Portugal. Their men’s team had begun the week on a brighter note, drawing 0-0 with Georgia at Windsor Park on Monday to remain top of their Nations League group with eight points from four games. England’s men then beat Czechia 3-0 at Wembley on Tuesday, Harry Kane scoring twice, while Scotland surrendered a lead in a 2-1 home defeat by Slovenia.

Sunday’s South Coast derby went Southampton’s way. James Bree scored the only goal against Portsmouth after 20 minutes, and Saints held on for a 1-0 win despite Cameron Bragg receiving a second yellow card before half-time. It was Southampton’s first league victory over their rivals in 21 years.

Further down the English leagues, Robbie Savage’s first League One match in charge of Peterborough United ended in a 3-1 win at his former club Leicester City. Plymouth Argyle retained top spot with a 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon, while Reading won 5-1 at MK Dons. In League Two, Salford City lead after winning 2-0 at Cheltenham Town, with Barnet one point behind following a 3-1 victory at Bristol Rovers.

Celtic return to the summit; The New Saints pull clear

Rangers briefly led the Scottish Premiership after beating Kilmarnock 3-1 on Saturday, but Celtic reclaimed first place on Sunday with a 2-0 win at Motherwell. Camilo Durán opened the scoring and Benjamin Nygren added the second, leaving Celtic two points clear. Hearts’ 5-0 win over St Mirren was Saturday’s standout score, while St Johnstone rose to fifth after Josh Fowler’s penalty secured a 1-0 victory at Aberdeen.

In the Cymru Premier, The New Saints stretched their lead to six points with a 6-1 win at Holywell Town on Friday. Connah’s Quay Nomads stayed second by winning 2-1 at Briton Ferry Llansawel, and Colwyn Bay moved into the top five after Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Flint Town United.

Northern Ireland’s Premiership leaders Coleraine also protected their position with a narrow win. Matthew Shevlin’s goal settled Saturday’s 1-0 meeting with Cliftonville; second-placed Linfield beat Bangor 2-0, while Larne won 3-0 at Crusaders.

Cup action during the international window

The domestic cup programme continued on Tuesday with 63 goals across 19 Jersey Mike’s Trophy group matches. MK Dons recorded the biggest win, 7-1 against Brentford Under-21s, while Huddersfield Town beat Rochdale 5-0. Peterborough’s 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town Under-21s gave Savage a winning start before his league debut at Leicester. Senior European club competitions had no fixtures in this round-up’s 5–11 October window; Champions League and Europa League action resumes in the coming week.
