Bolton Wanderers vs. West Ham United F.A. Cup Scrapbook 1923: The White Horse Final

£4.99

In 1923, the showpiece match of English football’s primary cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (better known simply as the F.A. Cup), was the first football match to be played at England’s new showpiece arena, Wembley Stadium. The two finalists, Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United, had competed through five rounds to reach the final, which then had the added attraction of featuring competing clubs from the North and South of England and from each of the then two hierarchical Divisions of the Football League – as well as a London club in the form of West Ham and the presence of King George V to present the trophy to the winning team. It was to become a match that would be forever remembered for all the wrong reasons, however, being preceded by chaotic scenes as vast crowds surged into the stadium, far exceeding its official capacity of approximately 125,000. Some estimates put the actual number that gained entry as high as 300,000, although this is impossible to verify since thousands broke through the barriers without paying or activating the turnstiles. This is the story of that Cup campaign.
